With the recent rumors about the PSP GO! making their waves throughout the internet, and with E3 fast approaching (which we will be attending) we felt it prudent to extend the “how can we make it better” approach to the remaining game systems.
This first What If? – a regular feature in which we will be dissecting a product or game and how to make it better – is based on the Playstation 3.
How would YOU make the Playstation 3 better? What would you improve? What would you change? Once all notes are compiled, we’ll create a follow-up feature with what an updated PS3 could be.
Let us know in the comments about what YOU would change!

Rumors are circulating like wildfire on the internet today on the “confirmation” that 1UP is receiving about the oft-mentioned Sony PSP revision. Dubbed the “PSP GO!” the system is said to be UMD-less, with configuartions of an 8GB or 16GB internal HDD. The removal of the UMD will allow for a thinner system — perhaps the “slider” concept that we continue to hear references of in back alleys and NWO meetings. While Sony is rumored to be removing the UMD, over 100 “classic” PSP games will be released for download via the PSN store or WiFi kiosks at your favorite mall gaming depot. FuncoLand, we miss you so.
According to their sources, the GO! will be unveiled at E3 this year. And since SideQuesting will be in attendance we’ll do our best to get our (more than likely) greasy, sweaty hands on the system.
This is all just “Rumor and Speculation” though, so take the info with a grain of salt until sometime on June 2nd.

Well, this one does come as a bit of a shock: Mass Effect is coming to the iPhone. You remember Mass Effect, the game that Microsoft often reiterated was “only going to appear on Microsoft platforms”? Well Microsoft, a Mass Effect game is indeed coming to arch-nemesis Apple. Mass Effect: Jacob’s Story was revealed in a survey over the past weekend, including images and some game details. While it may not be a true Mass Effect game, it closely follows the cannon of the ME universe and will be used as an episodic prequel to the forthcoming Mass Effect 2.
Wait. Wouldn’t a prequel to a sequel be the original? Ouch, our heads are spinning now.
The details of the game are sparse but a few notes did surface.
Here is your opportunity to play the story of Jacob Taylor, a biotic-powered super-soldier who stumbles across a plot to terrorize civilization’s greatest beacon of hope. Can you prevent a heinous attack that threatens to knock humanity off the galactic stage?
Key features of Mass Effect include:
* Gripping story line that enables you, playing super-soldier Jacob Taylor, to prevent galactic chaos
* Stylish art presentation delivers an animated graphic novel experience
* A blend of nuanced story telling with gripping top-down shooter combat
* Experience the back-story behind some of the main characters in the upcoming Mass Effect 2 (for Xbox 360 and PC).
* 2 hour story-based experience with stunning graphics, animated presentation, and top-down arcade-style combat

Our initial thoughts are that the game has a certain “Contra” overhead view, even evoking memories of the classic Gauntlet in presentation. Can this overhead view do the Mass Effect universe justice?
A price tag of $3.99 was revealed for the first game in the episodic series. And seriously, four bucks for only two hours’ worth of gaming? Then again, we pay more for shorter XBLA and WiiWare games all the time.
More images after the break.

In a surprise move (note: a surprise in that it amazes us that Square-Enix decidedly took this long to announce such a game) Square has filed a trademark for “Dragon Quest Wars”. Our first inclination was to jump for joy at the thought of YET ANOTHER STRATEGY RPG, as if the 100+repetitive hours of Final Fantasy: Tactics Advance 2 wasn’t enough. However, the addition of the moniker “Wars” can at least provide fodder for some creative game variations.
A Master Chief with Dragonball spiky hair?
A Zerg-rush of slimes?
A Warthog that is ACTUALLY a wart hog?
Probably not. At least Square Enix has set us up with a teaser for what could be another platinum-selling game in the land of the rising sun, and another reason to wonder why Dragon Quest games have yet to catch fire Stateside.

We’ve heard of Steam, Valve’s content-delivering HUD for PC gaming. We’ve also just been treated to the impending arrival of OnLive. But let it be known that there are other methods of download-to-play and free-to-play gaming networks popping up on the web all the time. Spell of Play Studios is one such network, delivering original gaming to a built-in social network.
This week, we take a look at what they have to offer.

In less than a year or so we’ll have our hands full with Bioware’s Mass Effect 2. Trotting around the universe on an epic journey of human survival, war, and the love of aliens will be the focus of at least a month of our gaming time. Mass Effect 2 is set to continue the storyline of the first game, even bringing back several cast members (dead or alive, it seems) all the while improving on any flaws of the original. In anticipation of the sequel, I had realized that I never actually played the first game. I took some time out recently to play the first Mass Effect and find out what the sequel would potentially have to live up to, as well as to see how the game could hold up against competitors a year after its release. This is the “Late to the Party” review of Mass Effect on the XBox 360.

Over the last few months we had been hearing blocky whispers of a new game in the LEGO franchise that would revolve around the plethora… nay, HERITAGE of the Rock Band universe. Today Harmonix made our wildest cubic dreams come true with the introduction of LEGO Rock Band (via press release).
The game, coming Holiday 2009 from Traveler’s Tales Games, is intended to be the family-oriented version of a game that uses fake plastic instruments with brightly-colored buttons. The game will use the current Rock Band instruments when it arrives for the Wii, PS3, 360 and DS (!?). No word on how the DS version will function, apart from the obviously possible Rock Band Unplugged (PSP) mechanic.
Let’s take bets on when the first brick-like guitars and drums will be released. Anyone?
The playlist is pop/kid-friendly with music from Pink, Blur, and Europe’s epic “The Final Countdown“.

We all knew that Fallout 3 was a game ripe for a sequel. Bethesda, the marketing and product development geniuses that they are, agree with us. Announced today during a press event in London, Fallout: New Vegas will be making its way onto our PCs, PS3s, and XBox 360s sometime in 2010. While not a true sequel, F:NV takes place during the same time period as F3, only in the setting of New Vegas. Our educated guess is that New Vegas has something to do with Las Vegas… call us crazy!
The game is being developed by Obsidian Entertainment, which includes some of the same chaps that developed the first Fallout game.
No other information on the game was available at the time of this post, but if it plays anything like F3 count me in as a sucker willing to give up another round of $60 to Bethesda’s version of the GTAIII/Vice City/San Andreas series, minus the pimp-slapping.
However, it DOES take place in Vegas, so who knows.

Insta-review: Mafia Wars is a staple of the free internet gaming realm. It’s extremely easy to play yet filled with incredible depth. It is fun, casual, and core all at once, and is best played in bite-sized increments on every system it has appeared on. I highly recommend those who haven’t played it to give it a try. You WILL be sucked in (until you get bored, at least).
Okay, now that that’s over with I can dive into the full-on fun review of the game. In this review, I’ll be comparing the Facebook and iPhone versions of the game that continues to take us gullible gamers by storm. But here’s the surprising thing: It’s not the traditional gamer that enjoys it most.
