Not initially... But it was reported recently that he was just brought back on to oversee the final stages of it. I think Joystiq or 1UP had the article. I'll see if I can dig it up.

I'm going to go with a combination of #1 and #3.

#1. Consumers expect and demand quality. The speed of information on the web means that any flaw or annoyance in a game is beat to death in the first few days after release, which are critical to a game's success. Buzz will only get the geeks in the door the first day. Good press is what keeps everyone else coming in.

#3. There are some pretty big games coming in Q3 and Q4 '09. Two off the top of my head: DiRT2 (which I'm really excited about), and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Two big hitters in the two major gaming genres is probably enough incentive for a lot of publishers to hold off a little while.
Movie studios do this kind of thing all the time. They'll set a release date in March or April for say Thanksgiving weekend. The next big action flick comes in around June and announces they're coming in the same weekend. Knowing that they're going to get hammered, the first studio will either push it back to the next space, or bring it forward to catch some box office beforehand.
