Apart from Super Mario, there is probably not a video game series more iconic than the Legend of Zelda.  Its sales were always good and its legion of fans never faltered in accepting another new edition in the land of Hyrule.  It regularly recieves high review scores with each new entry, with critics and newcomers alike regularly going ga-ga.  The series has also spawned what many consider to be the best game ever made, Ocarina of Time.

But since Wind Waker‘s artistic take, the series has been dubbed “stagnant” in terms of innovation.  The first Wii incarnation, Twilight Princess, although including the ability to transform into a wolf, centered more on story and character development instead of the action and adventure that previous Zelda games had enriched themselves in.  Miyamoto’s love of cave exploration and action had become second to the glitz and glamor associated with new hardware, it can be said.

In line with our recent “Redesigning the Console” feature series (see: Redesigning the XBox or our Wii topic), we’ve decided to tackle individual game series as our next endeavor.  We all have opinions on what will get us to buy a game, or what we would like to see improved to keep our joy of a series going.

The first falls on the shoulders of Link.  With a new Zelda announced at E3 this year, many have high hopes for what the next iteration will bring.  What would you change in the Zelda series, if anything?  What would you improve, add, or remove?  Or, does the series need any changing at all?  Is it on the right path?  Leave your comments below, and we’ll compile as many as possible into a feature article next month.

    Enough with the damn Water Temple! Everyone hates it! Link to the Past was amazing. Wind Waker also amazing. But the ones between…I don’t know. I just was not all that crazy about. Make it fresh, reinvent it and change it up. I can only play the same game so many times.

    Turn the kid into an adult!
    Enough with the trash tristar, cliched enemies, and stupid legend stories.

    I’ll turn the game to a mature game like NInja Gaiden!

    Now stupid kids won’t be banging on about this game all the time, they’ll only do that unless they finish it and experience the insane gameplay and story:)

    I would probably change the objectives. Playing “Twilight Princess”, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was essentially playing “Ocarina of Time” with better graphics.

    What I would do is make it so you can actually interact with character allies, so you can use them. Have them help you in a dungeon, or use multiple allies in a huge battle(s) with enemies. I guess like lord of the rings.

    The graphics in “Twilight Princess” were great, but if possible, make them better. Make me know that I am in fact, playing a current gen console, and not a game that feels like it could have been released on the original xbox.

    Use the Wii Motion Plus for sword battles, or archery, or puzzles.

    Have the main quests, and objectives, but also throw in some hidden caves, dungeons, and places to go. I feel like once the game ends, that’s it. After I beat Ganon, let me roam around, find stuff that I can unlock by looking. “Wind Waker” did that, and that was great!

    @Hobbs.
    Do you realize there are hidden holes all over the Twilight Princess map. Try digging as a wolf in the circular flower beds to find these caves, they usually contain lots of gems. I finished the last boss battle ages ago but I still go back to snoop around and find these caves.

    As for a future Zelda game…….
    I would like to battle an Evil version of Princess Zelda
    I would obviously like motionplus sword fights
    I would like a Grand theft auto style “wanted” meter. The more notorious I am the more guards and monsters will come looking for me.

    @Skids
    I know that, but I mean like dungeons. Say you see a hole in a cliff side in the first level of the game. You wonder how to get up there. Later on in the game, you have the right tools to get there, and it’s a big dungeon that’s a side quest.

    Optional dungeons that offered more than just rupies would be great.

    How about instead of each level having an item used to finish that dungeon and boss, there is actually stuff that makes your progression easier, but it’s not impossible to finish the game without it. Hidden/optional gear?

    I would like there to be some different armor types and sets that you could collect and equip that are reflected on Link’s character model.

    How about a non-annoying sidekick that fights along with you that is also controllable by a second human player (RE:5 style)? It could even be Zelda, which would force the story to not revolve around saving her.

    And for God’s sake, give the man some pants!

    I think Nintendo should do with Zelda whats happening with Metroid. No, I don’t mean outsource it to another company. I’m talking about how Metroid Prime, though fantastic, ran its course in 3 games and now Metroid: Other M looks to do a complete 180 and change everything. Ocarina, Majora, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess have all had the same core gameplay as did all the Metroid Prime games. Though they were great games, maybe it’s finally time to start from scratch again like Other M looks like it’s doing.

    Rather than figure out how you can tweak the base Ocarina of Time gameplay, treat the franchise like its going to 3D for the first time again. And if there was ever a game that should be Motion+ exclusive (with an optional bundle version), Zelda is it.

    Either way though, even if it is another Ocarina of Time clone, I will buy it and probably love it.

    I have always been a huge Zelda fan, it’s my favorite series, but as that fan I feel that I have the most I want from it. I think the one way Zelda should go would be for a more epic story, a story and writing being main focuses. I’m not sure that the gameplay itself should change much, beyond maybe adding some Prince of Persia fluidity to Link’s movement and Motion Plus for combat, gameplay makes Zelda. For something that has “Legend” in it’s title, though, it has never had that great a story. It has the opportunity to be the epic and story driven game of Nintendo’s franchises, something they don’t really have. If an emotional twist can be added to Zelda, I feel like it would add a lot more. Fantasy is reliant on it’s story and feelings of wonder and of an epic adventure. An epic and emotional story would really inject some life into a Zelda adventure.
    Other than story I would say optional items and exploration would be a great addition, Motion Plus could really add some depth to the combat, and graphics that are on par with the upcoming Monster Hunter Tri. Thankfully, those last two seem pretty likely.

    I agree with xino. (post #2). Turning zelda into a more mature game, with the story, etc. would be a welcome change in my mind. The game wouldn’t necessarily have to be M rated, just more more for adults. I would love to have a deep, engrossing story, heavy themes, romance, sadness, etc.

    One the gameplay side, I think that it needs to be less linear. More unlockables, more areas, and more side quests. Also, changing the formula for dungeons would be wonderful. People that have played even just 2 zelda games will no longer be amused by the way the dungeons are played in zelda. You fight a mini boss, get a new equip. Use that equip to progress further in the dungeon, and use it to kill it boss. It IS a good formula, but it needs to be changed.

    Oh, and being able to jump. That is a necessity.
