To further elaborate on wiifan's comments, the seal of approval first appeared in a time where garage atari games had flooded the market many of which were virtually unplayable due to non existent quality testing and of course atari had nothing to do with them. This is one of the main reasons behind the video game crash so the seal back then meant that the game was PLAYABLE as it still means today. You may not like ninjabread man but at least you can play the game from start to finish (if you are that insane) because there was a time where that was luxury.

perhaps rivaling those of Apple.

heh right there was a time when the word apple was only known to the geeks and its market share was nearly non existent. Those people who had an apple when they were initially popular did not really stick around :p

"For instance, the Nintendo Seal of Quality used to mean something. I would not play an NES or SuperNES game without it signifying that Nintendo had looked at this game and confirmed that it was of a good enough quality for many gamers to enjoy. It was akin to the Comics Code that adorned my copies of X-Men in the 80s. Now, the NSoQ is featured on Chrysler Classic Racing AND on Super Mario Galaxy, and only as a tiny logo on the back of the game's case. What happened? Nintendo, looking to expand its audience, has allowed shovelware to cannibalize its shelf space. Where there could be 20 copies of MadWorld there are now 5 copies each of My Poniez, My Poniez 2, Generic Fitness Guru 18, and MadWorld. Quality over quantity will help change the perception of throw-away software dominating the system [Bob/SQ]."

This was never a seal of value or greatness. It was like Apple's iPod approval logo on iPod products. It's a guarantee that it's approved for use with Apple's iPods just like the seal from Nintendo was for confirmation that the product was approved for use with Nintendo's systems. How could this simple little thing be so misunderstood. My kid can see that logo and know it is approved by Nintendo for use with the Nintendo system. She's 7. Bob must not be in Rocket Science classes at the moment. The short bus ran out of gas I guess.

I agree, but I don't think the hardware's graphics capabilities can be improved unless Nintendo releases a WiiHD console. The article was mostly trying to see what could be done with current hardware intact. Unless another peripheral is released (perhaps a USB "graphics improvement" add-on)...

But then that could turn the Wii into a 32X all over again. Yikes!

Agreed on most points, except hardware. The Wii's hardware was woefully underpowered even upon release, and now it's just embarrassing. Some exclusives have managed to make optimal use of it (Mario Galaxies, Mad World), but many other have fallen flat, especially multi-platform releases where the differences between systems are glaring.
