Review: I Fight Dragons (Music)

You like video games, right?  Sure you do. Otherwise, you might be in the wrong part of the internet.  Well, then you might be interested in some music along those lines.  I Fight Dragons will please your ears and send you back to a time when 8-bit was king.

As a child growing up in the 1980’s I can recall hearing 8-bit chip tones rendering music in great detail (that’s 1980’s version of great detail, mind you).  By today’s standard it’s archaic, but back then, it was ground breaking.  So from time to time I come across things that jet me back to the good old days and I Fight Dragons is one of those things.

I can’t take credit for “finding” these guys and gal.  Ryan Gan mentioned them a while back on Twitter, and I got hooked.  So much so, I downloaded their album Cool is Just a Number that same day from Amazon.  Since then, they have made it into most of my playlists.  The Album is not long; there are only six tracks, but they’re five really good songs (the first track is an intro and I don’t think it would count).  At $5, you’d be a fool not to buy it.

This past Saturday I had a chance to see them play live and let me tell you–WOW!  They were playing Martyr’s, here in Chicago.  The night opened with Starscream and Anamanaguchi who were good, but a little too chip tune heavy for my personal tastes.

When I Fight Dragons came on stage you could tell they were having fun.  Their stage act was funny and a great throw back to the old NES days of video games.  Their music is a great balance of chip tune and rock.  The songs are fun and easy to sing a long.  Their use of NES controllers, the Power Glove, Power Pad, and even a Rock Band Guitar will make your inner geek go, “Wow, how did they do that?”

To cap the night off, they played Rick Ashley’s “Never Gonna Give you Up”.  Yes, they Rick Rolled the club, but it was a rock version with the Mario Bros. theme laced into it.  Look for them to be on tour with MC Chris in the near future.  What more do you need to know?
