My favorite open world game from 2009 would probably be Prototype as it’s the only open world game from 2009 that I’ve gotten so far, always like running around blowing up everybody in sight. I did play a lot of Fallout 3 this year, but that was out in 2008.

The best has got to be GTA IV: The Lost and the Damned. By creating a concise and followable storyline as opposed to the standard 200+ missions in regular GTAs Rockstar manage to create and develop characters more than poor Niko could ever be.

While Prototype presented some of the most inane situations I have seen to date in my history as a gamer, I have to say that inFamous really took the cake for me this year. Its comic book sensibilities struck a cord with me, as well as the opportunity to play as an amoralistic asshole or the good guy who ensures that innocents aren’t harmed and that justice is served. I enjoyed these two quite different choices, and having my decisions carry such weight. Cole’s back story was entirely enigmatic, and overall I found that it was the superior game to Prototype, though only in the grand scheme of things. Prototype offered the ability to jet up the side of buildings while lugging around a car. A CAR. Now THAT’S impressive.
