We broke out our Band Hero review copy at a local party recently, where several folks had the chance to play it. The women flocked to the game more so than the men. These are the results.
Stay tuned for our full review. Until then, enjoy this taste.

Game: Shatter
Developer: Sidhe Interactive
Released: July 23, 2009
Platform: PlayStation 3 (PSN)
Sidhe Interactive, developer of gems such as Madagascar Karts and 2007 Game of the Year contender Jackass: The Game, has shocked the world by releasing the surprisingly competent Shatter.
You may be asking yourself, “What is Shatter?” Well, as the story goes, Pong and Breakout had a lovechild that then grew up and went to college. In college, the young prototype met these two cool dudes named Space Invaders Extreme and Geometry Wars 2, who introduced the naïve program to things like style, trance music, and brightly colored shapes. Months later, that mess of robot language dropped out and became the Shatter found on PSN today.
Or something like that.

Black Friday has come and gone… what did you buy?
SideQuesting wants to contribute to the madness by giving you a couple of games. Inspired by the racing from store to store at odd hours of the morning (personally, we slept until noon while still in a haze from the turducken we scarfed down at the SQ office party) we’re teeing up a couple of great racing games for you: PGR3 and Forza 2! Now, they may not be the NEWEST editions of the games, but they certainly are tons of fun… and should get you in the mood for the rest of your consumer racing these next 30 or so days. And in the spirit of the season, we’re working this contest with our compadres over at CarDesignFetish.com, our sister site about cool automotive design.
How to win? Simple.
1) Follow both SideQuesting and CarDesignFetish on Twitter and tweet this message: I want to win these games from @SideQuesting and @CarDesignFetish for #FreeStuffFriday! http://bit.ly/8AQ7O2
3) Enter up to once per day Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
4) Must be a US or Canadian resident to enter (sans Quebec… sorry!)
5) Check back on Sunday Nov 29, 10PM EST (when we draw the winner) at the bottom of this post to see who wins.
Good Luck!
[Update: The winner of the games is.... @HotPocketNinja! Congrats on winning and thanks for entering!]

We love sophomoric humor. Take, for instance, the joke about the two nuns and the car insurance salesman. Ah, good times.
It should come as no surprise that we love great porn-related topics as well. In a “DOH! Why didn’t we think of this earlier” head-slapper, it dawned on us during our latest episode of the SideQuest that one thing was terribly missing in the gaming world: a list of porn versions of popular videogames.
Sure we’ve all heard of Left 4 Head, the porn film based on the Left 4 Dead franchise, but far be it from us to stop there. Halo: ODSTD. Metal Rear Solid 4. The possibilities are endless. We’ve begun the list, and it’s up to you, the Internet, to take it to heights never before seen.
Yes, we’ve sunk that low. In fact, if you are easily offended then don’t read any further. And if you’re not easily offended then you probably will be once you reach the end. At least for your sake we’ve posted the list after the break. Take a look and try to figure out what games these poor representations of our inner 12-year-olds are based on.
Enjoy, you sick bastards! (Extremely NSFW!)

“New Super Mario Bros Wii is a game baked in classic action, the kind that seems as fresh and fun today as it did 20 years ago.“
Game: New Super Mario Bros Wii
Developer/Publisher: Nintendo
Released: November 2009
Platforms: Wii
“Perfect chaos.” Those two words are the easiest way to describe what New Super Mario Bros Wii is designed to be. Whether it’s the refined single player adventure across the stereotypically fun Mario worlds or the chaotic action that refines how local multiplayer should be done in action games, NSMBWii nails it on all levels. It serves as the ideal “bridge” game, designed to satisfy both the core and casual gamers at the same time, and pulls off that feat with near perfection.
It’s the kind of answer to the Call of Duties and Maddens this season that video game purists have been eagerly waiting for.

All of the hullabaloo over Modern Warfare 2 has brought us a bit of swag to give to our readers. This week on #FreeStuffFriday we have a sweet Modern Warfare 2/XBox Live T-Shirt (in XL size)! And, don’t forget to check out our latest episode of the SideQuest, where we talk Modern Warfare 2 with Justin McElroy of Joystiq.com
How to win? Simple.

4) Check back on Sunday Nov 22, 10PM EST (when we draw the winner) in the comments of this post to see who wins.

You really have to give videogamers an incredible amount of props. As fans we’ll go through all manner of lengths to inject gaming into our lives, whether at school or work, or things more sinister. We recently took a look at the Metal Gear Solid: Philanthropy movie created almost entirely by students and young professionals out of love for the series. The film Turbo was inspired by fighting games like Street Fighter.
Now comes a project inspired by the many unique quips of Team Fortress 2. Created by student and Youtube member thrillhouse900 the short film features characters from Team Fortress 2 in a decidedly mundane world, and includes some CGI work thrown in to create the sentry. The film is only about a minute in length, but captures the essence of the game in that Mega64 kind of way.
And the comments, of course, are priceless.
mediocregatsby88: a red engineer makes a red sentry that kills a red scout and then gets killed by a red spy? AND YOU PLAN TO BEAT THE BLUES HOW?
Touche.

Late this Spring saw the first few 2009-year game delays begin to role in. By mid-Summer the delay trend had become a sift, with games being pushed back into “Spring 2010″ on an increasingly regular basis. We even dedicated an entire #gamechat to it. Blame Modern Warfare, blame the economy, blame quality concerns; whatever the reason the dwindling Autumn line-up brought a tear to our eye, until we glanced over at that now-goliath “Spring 2010″ list.
After E3 we knew of a few of the games that were already planned for 2010, and as conferences continued throughout the year we heard of special editions, re-makes, and more. While the industry has been focusing on the first quarter of next year, there is plenty of incredible gaming to be had for the remainder. Barring any delays from 2010 to 2011… yes, dare we say that it may very well be the best year ever for gaming?
Read our list below to see just how many AAA-level titles will be soaking up your time (and money).

“DJHero does for the genre what the original Guitar Hero did: satisfy the innovative niche and focus on the core experience of playing music.“
Game: DJ Hero
Developer/Publisher: FreeStyle Games for Activision
Released: October 2009
Platforms: Wii, XBox 360, PS3
I’m a weekend deejay. On any given Saturday in the Detroit area, I can be found spinning popular music, hip hop, dance, or even wedding songs. My turntables are my most prized instruments, and I’m able to get a crowd to gleefully fill the dance floor for well into the night. There really is no other thrill like it: controlling the moves, motions, and emotions of people who go absolutely bonkers once you play “their song.”
Over the last few years I’ve been in love with the music rhythm game genre. There is just something about tapping a plastic guitar pretending to jam away at an epic 7-minute song while friends sing out of key that keeps me in love with the games.
When DJ Hero was announced it was easy for me to get excited and say, “This is going to be for me.” Cut to a year later and with a plastic turntable in my hands, I can safely say, “Yes, this is still for me.” Continue Reading
