Tilt-Shifting Game Visuals

Tilt-Shifting Game Visuals

Earlier this year, I picked up the TiltShift app for the iPhone.  Intrigued by the toylike imagery of cities that I had seen created with tilt-shift photography — the process allows for depth of field trickery to be placed onto existing images — the gimmick was enough to get me to drop $1.99 on the app.  I spent time taking photos of various scenes and applying the app’s filters, creating Lego-sized versions of my office, the drive in to work, and Ford Field while the Lions played the Eagles.

The app allows for any image to be imported as well, letting me bring in photos from vacations past and apply the same filters.  It dawned on me that I could bring in computer-generated images, and was immediately inspired to begin processing scenes from video games.

Below, you’ll find a gallery of several of these images, using scenes from Nier, Zelda, Alan Wake, and more. The best toy-like pics seem to appear out of the more modern 3-dimensional games, with the images from 2D games creating minimal depth (albeit still interesting) visuals.  While not as toy-like as I would have hoped (it was my first time playing with the process) it still provided for some nice images.  Have a look, and feel free to add your critiques or your own versions in the comments.
