SideQuesting’s Best of 2010 #3: Super Mario Galaxy 2

If Super Mario Galaxy was a Baskin-Robbins two scoop fudge sundae with vanilla and chocolate ice cream and a cherry on top, then Super Mario Galaxy 2 is a Baskin-Robbins two scoop brownie sundae with Gold Medal Ribbon and Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream, caramel topping, and TWO cherries.  It really is more of the same; yet with a few changes and additions, the game leaves us feeling more than full and satisfied.

SMG2 makes it to the #3 spot on our Top Ten thanks to these updates.  It is enjoyable and entertaining, bright and colorful, and surprisingly challenging. The addition of Yoshi not only changes how known level-types are played (some that are reminiscent of those found in the original Galaxy), but it also allows for the introduction of ingenious new ones.  Memorable music, play mechanics that both challenge and cheer, and moments of joy that leave us exhilarated and exhausted; if Nintendo has a winning formula, this is it.  It may very well be the greatest 3D platformer to date.  It’s certainly the most fun.

And, coincidentally, it’ll probably rot your teeth just the same.
