Birth and Burial: Duke Nukem and Mirror’s Edge

Birth and Burial: Duke Nukem and Mirror’s Edge

There’s much to be said about the wonderful Mirror’s Edge console and iOS games:  Beautiful, engaging, action-packed, groundbreaking.  Sadly, the same will never be said for a sequel, as EA has pulled the plug on the somewhat-in-development Mirror’s Edge 2.

So, can we finally stop asking about it?

In our new semi-regular feature “Birth & Burial” we will discuss games that we love that have been killed off (burials), as well as games that we never thought that we’d see the light of day or weren’t even remotely expecting (births).

OBITUARY

Mirror’s Edge is a game that attracted a niche, but dedicated, audience.  Unfortunately, it failed to reach the sales numbers that Electronic Arts was hoping for. When cutbacks at software companies became necessary during the economic turmoil, the status of a full-fledged sequel was always in doubt.  We kept hoping that there would be an announcement of a sequel, but nothing ever materialized.

Recently, EA added salt to the wounds by outright cancelling Mirror’s Edge 2, which somewhat proved that a sequel was at one point in the works.  The financial undertaking for under-performing sales were too much, especially when we sit back and realize that the gaming industry is a business first and our hopes are regularly dashed so that companies can stay afloat.

So, let’s finally bury all talk about Mirror’s Edge 2 forever.  It’s never coming out.  It’s as dead as Guitar Hero.  REST IN PEACE.

BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT

Here’s one that we never thought would happen.  Saved from the clutches of death, pronounced dead on several occasions, and eons in development, Duke Nukem Forever is a thing.  A real, gosh darn thing. Set to be released shortly, the game’s newest developers, Gearbox, aimed to finish the work that 3D Realms began so, so long ago.

While previews of the game haven’t exactly lit fires under anyone, it does prove that if enough money is invested in something, it just might eventually happen… if that something is sold to another company to finish, that is.

Join us in welcoming the bouncing new baby to the videogame world, and expect several sequels now that Gearbox paid a good chunk for the rights.
