Gameplay Diary: Two Worlds II, Chapter 3

In the lead-up to our review of the game, our Two Worlds II diary examines our immediate reactions to playing through each chapter of the latest release from SouthPeak, TopWare, and Reality Pump

As soon as I teleported into the Swamps of Chapter 3, I knew almost immediately that this would be a completely different experience than the one I found in the vibrant section before.  “Gray, dirty, dead” are the words that come to mind when trying to describe it, both from a visual and a storyline sense.

And, incidentally, that’s how I felt after playing it.

In the previous gameplay installment, I worried that Chapter 2 may be shorter than I would have wanted it to be.  Even though Chapter 3 is much, much shorter in length when compared to the previous, it is justifiably so: Apart from very few events taking place, the area is rather dull.  There are no real sidequests to take part in.  The enemies are extremely repetitive and uninteresting, and the town is small and lifeless.

But, that’s probably what Reality Pump are aiming for here.  Without spoiling much of the story, this section takes place in a swamp-like area that has been ravaged by a curse.  The few townsfolk that are around are disenchanted and distrusting of visitors, and the enemies are of the slow-moving zombie ilk.  And… that’s pretty much it.

In fact, the majority of the time in Chapter 3 is spent walking back and forth along the entire length of the map as the teleports only act to pre-programmed areas, and don’t allow me to zoom to where I want to go.  Regardless, I’m glad it’s not that lengthy, as I was beginning to get depressed.  The area is fairly easy to complete, too, so I’m able to focus more on grinding and playing around with some of the magic crafting.

I still don’t have the hang of it, though.  Maybe I just never will.

The only real gripe I’ve developed is the ability for the acquired flashbacks to completely interrupt the game.  I’m learning to hate (main antagonist) Gandohar for that reason alone.
