The Evening Report: Gears of Duty Edition

Oi! It’s Friday night! What the hell are you doing reading about video games when you could be playing video games? Me? Well, I have a brain disorder that will only allow me to play the vidya gaems after I inform the masses on the biggest stories of the day. Today was a doozy. Three of the hottest running topics in the industry broke out stories. Minecraft, Call of Duty, and Gears of War all decided that today they wanted people to know more about them, so they called their agents and put out press releases. Well, none of these news items comes from a press release…but it’s the thought that counts?

zOMG! There is going to be another Call of Duty game! Considering it is an odd year most people think it will be a Modern Warfare game. A tipster sent pictures of dog tags (viewable in source) and a URL, findmakarov.com to our buddies at Joystiq. On one of the dog tags was the money-phrase “End the War”, and others that belong to “LtGen Shepherd”. While an Activision spokesman came out and said this was not real and merely a hoax, we are not buying it for even a minute. It isn’t uncommon for this type of maneuver to be attempted by PR in order to keep the official announcement in order.

Dear Yaniv, he lived only a short time…no, he isn’t actually dead. However, he may as well be dead because when Minecraft gets achievements he will not be able to be reached for a long period of time. Achievements were one of many things Markus ‘Notch’ Persson mentioned when speaking with Gamasutra’s Mike Rose. Other topics discussed were Mojang-owned servers, ports of the game onto other systems, pursuits into different games, and the possible Minecraft franchise. Let’s just hope Activision doesn’t try to buy Mojang, otherwise Notch will have to work on his résumé.

You know Gears of War 3 is coming September 20th, but what you don’t know…is just about anything to do with the beta. Gamespot, at an official event in San Francisco a few days back, interviewed Rod Fergusson (the executive producer on the game). Dear, sweet Rod gave out some info on the beta, including the fact that there will be unlockables for the retail version of the game if you met their requirements.

Unlockables include a special Gold Lancer, which you need a minimum of 90 matches played and 100 kills to keep. Also, Cole’s thrashball outfit is yours for 83 matches played. Inside the source link you can find info on some weapons, maps and gametypes available come beta time. We have the video here for you, which has some gameplay and the interview with Rod. September can’t come soon enough.
