The Evening Report: GDC Announcements Edition

GDC is rolling along at full speed and the amount of news is proof of that. From new security features, to possible closures of studios, there was news to be found under every rock. Bungie announcing work on their new game, and the newest major gaming platform looking to expand their service. Check the full story for what is going down.

If you are a computer gamer, you probably use Steam. You do so because of the all-encompassing network and it’s breadth of features. Tally another bullet point on there, this one under the security tab. That’s right, Valve is rolling out an option to tie your Steam account to a single PC. Meaning, if you have ever signed on at a friends house, they can’t hop on and mess with your settings. This ‘Steam Guard’ service is making use of the upcoming Intel IPT (Identity Protection Technology) that is rolling out later this year. Find out a few more details in the source link.

Crackerjack gaming service OnLive just announced several new features that will sweeten the deal for many that were having doubts. During their panel today at GDC, Joe Bently, the VP of engineering, put together a list of new features hitting OnLive by this Christmas. Several of those features include Steam, and Xbox Live like achievements, game invites, voice chat and the ability to be able to upload the popular Brag Clips directly to Youtube. Also, a new SDK went out to developers, the purpose of which is so they can work on getting the service compatible with all mobile platforms.

Kaos Studios is working on Homefront for publisher THQ, right now. THQ may dissolve said studio and relocate to Montreal. This is strange as Danny Bilson, VP of core games at THQ, said that Homefront already has more pre-orders than any other THQ game, with more than 200,000. Eurogamer’s sources at Kaos say the move would be due to the high cost of running a studio in New York City. Granted, all of this depends on how well Homefront ends up selling.

It seems strange for me to say Bungie is working on anything other than a Halo game, but with their split from Microsoft last year, we all knew this was coming. At Bungie’s panel at GDC today, lead network engineer Dave Aldridge announced the next game on the docket will be a “massively multiplayer action game.” I speculate the game may have an EVE Online feel to it. With the out of place space battle in Halo: Reach, they may have been working on some tech for a new game.
