This Week in Netflix

This Week in Netflix

We here at SideQuesting are nerds. Nerds aren’t only into video games, they can also be movie nerds, music nerds and sports nerds. This is common knowledge, but my nerdity will once again be helpful to you. I recently got the approval from Grand Poobah Dali to write a weekly post rounding up the best upcoming titles to Netflix Instant. Everyone that has Netflix knows some of the movies are hits, but many of them are just filler meant to pad out their numbers.

I will go through each weeks releases and post movies hitting that I like or were a critical/commercial success. Important note to my international friends: Sorry folks, this is US Netflix only.

TV shows hitting this week:

May 1st:

The Whitest Kids U Know, seasons 1-3 – Sketch comedy show that tackles many topics. Several recurring characters really make the show a must watch.

That’s it, unfortunately. Not every week can be a winner.

Notable movies of the week:

May 1st:

The Boy in the Striped PajamasA young boy in Poland lives near a World War 2 internment camp and sees the inhabitants on the other side of the fence wearing ‘striped pajamas’. The boy tries to understand why this is and what his father has to do with the prisoners.

Trainspotting: Collector’s EditionThe movie that launched Ewan McGregor’s career is a must watch. Exploring the negative effects of drug use, and listless relationships, Trainspotting is a dark movie that is uncomfortable to watch, but at the same time can make you laugh. Also should be noted that Trainspotting is one of the few book-to-movie adaptations that I actually enjoyed.

My Left Foot – Daniel Day-Lewis stars in this dramatic biography of writer Christy Brown. Christy Brown was born with cerebral palsy and had control over only one body part – his left foot, however, this did not stop him from becoming a writer. Truthfully, I have never made it all the way through this movie, but many people seem to enjoy it.

Pulp FictionThis 1994 Tarantino film stars John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson (amongst many others) as hit men pulling a job. One of the most emulated movies of all time, you would be remiss to not add this to your queue. But honestly, you should know this by now.

Personal favorites and other well regarded movies:

Starting off we have a couple of my favorite Jackie Chan movies coming to Instant with The Legend of Drunken Master and Operation Condor. I am a huge Chan-fan, so whenever a movie of his hits Instant, you will here about it from me. Expect these on May 1st.

Another man has two movies coming to Netflix Instant this week, and that is Kevin Smith. His movies Chasing Amy and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back will both be hitting on May 1st. Most people find these to be Smith’s worst movies, I still find them to be extremely entertaining, albeit childish.

One of the best shot movies (in my opinion) in the last few years is coming to Instant on May 1st, and that is Sin City. The art direction and cinematography alone is makes this movie one to see.

Last Few:

May 1st is a popular day, and the last few that are worth adding to your queue are Speed, Maverick, and Swingers will see Instant that day. Each are entertaining enough to check out, but are not great movies by any stretch.

Recent Favorites:

Some of the most popular movies added to queues in the last few days include Salt, Trigger Man, Easy A and The Other Guy. At least people aren’t watching Titanic 2.
