The Evening Report: No Controversy Here Edition

Today was a day of controversy amongst the members of the gaming press. Some hurtful things were said and much mud was slung between writers. Guess what, though? None of that has to do with you folks. You care about the big, big news that hit today (starting early in the morning). So I searched and scanned the sites, plucking the pertinent stories off of the interwebs, and I came out with a dearth of news.

Micro-Skype, SpyParty goes the way of Minecraft, a new Alan Wake, and more! Continue reading for the details!

Do you have a strange need to play the original Dragon Quest games again but didn’t feel like busting out the Famicom or Super Famicom? Well, you aren’t alone, and SquareEnix realizes that. Coming in September, the company will be releasing a 25th anniversary bundle that includes: “Dragon Quest (Famicom), Dragon Quest 2 (Famicom), Dragon Quest 3 (Famicom), Dragon Quest 1&2 (Super Famicom) and Dragon Quest 3 (Super Famicom)”. Unfortunately, it appears that the collection is not even an up-rezing of the originals, but simply a direct Wii port a la Super Mario All-Stars.

Have you ever been in an XBL party with seven other people, and the voice chat quality is in the gutter? Yea, me too, just about every time. Microsoft decided that they would address the problem today, by announcing their purchase of PC chat client Skype and the integration Skype will have in this and future Microsoft branded consoles.

My speculation is that this move could be one to help facilitate larger parties on Xbox Live and possibly to help with clan support. You can get an ungodly number of people on a Skype call without a drop in quality. Hell, on the SideQuest we had 14 people on one episode and it sounded great the whole time. Hopefully this move will pay dividends in the near future.

Hitman: Absolution is a new game coming in the Hitman series. Other than director Tore Blystad saying “This is both a familiar and yet significantly different experience from other Hitman games; something our silent assassins will relish, as will all those new to the Hitman world”, there isn’t much to say about this game yet. Check out the source link for more information.

Ever since Minecraft made its millions by allowing users to gain entry to the beta via payment, there have been grumblings amongst other small developers looking to follow suit. Today, Chris Hecker announced that SpyParty will be available for $15 after you get an invitation. Just as with Minecraft, the early purchasers will get a ‘free’ copy of the full game when it is released.

Joystiq was in contact with the fine folks at Remedy Entertainment today, and found out that an Alan Wake game is on its way, but the next game is not Alan Wake 2. With that giant cloud that is E3 blocking the news-sun, Remedy isn’t letting much out of their mouths at this point. I just hope that if this isn’t a direct sequel, then I hope it is a companion story to the first game in which you will play as Barry. Here’s to hoping!
