2016 prediction letter

It’s 2011.  Kinect and 3D are the focus of our games. Big-budget console games have been trumped financially by social, freemium and mobile gaming. We’re nearing the end of this generation of game systems.

We have a lot riding on the rest of this year, as we pave the way for a pivotal turnover in 2012. Up until now, we’ve been buying games and peripherals like crazy, throwing money around thanks to a booming market.  Well, these next 5 years will change all of that.  We need to think long term. We need to think about Xbox 720, PS4, and Wii U. We need to think about 2016.

There are a lot of ways to make crazy predictions about what the gaming landscape will be like 5 years from now, but those usually disappear after a couple of weeks of floating around the web or on podcasts. The team at SideQuesting want to try something a little different.

All this week, we’re asking our readers and staff to write letters (or emails) to someone in the gaming industry in 2016 predicting what they think the gaming landscape will be like. It could be a letter to yourself, a letter to Ken Levine, or a letter to Capcom.  You can predict or ask about the status of Call of Duty, how Nintendo is no longer a hardware developer, or why the Madden series STILL hasn’t changed.

You can write an email, scan a hand-written letter and send it to us, draw a picture, or make a video.

You make the choice as to who you’ll be addressing, what you’re writing about, and how you present it.

Throughout the week we’ll publish your letters on the site.  At the end of the week we will collect all of the letters, print them and/or plop them onto a USB stick, and drop them into an actual time capsule to be opened in 2016… or maybe not. It’ll all be virtual then, anyways, hosted in the cloud.

Rules:

  • Include your name (or screen name), the date you wrote the letter, and who you’re addressing.
  • Include a way for people to reach you (Twitter?) that will be added in the article to give you credit
  • ONE LETTER PER PERSON
  • Email your letter to: sidequesting at gmail dot com
  • Be concise and clear about your predictions/questions/concerns about games in 2016
  • By sending us your letter, you agree to allow us to post it on this website, and perhaps to repost it for 2016 or place it into a time capsule to be opened in 2016.

I think you’re getting ahead of yourself if you think the PS3 is “mature” yet. With the PS2, we had GTA3, Vice City, and San Andreas. With the PS3, we’ve had basically ONE GTA game. I’m sure as hell hoping there’s a few more before this console is done….

On top of that, I find kinect and motion sensing games annoying, and a gimmick. Buttons and sticks offer way more precise control than any of these motion games.
