Steam went and got itself hacked; here’s how to change your password

If you haven’t heard by now, Valve’s prom-king popular download service, Steam, has been hacked. Originally, it was thought that only the services forums were at risk, but now it seems that data regarding personal and credit cart information might also be up for grabs.

Now, it may be safe to assume that anyone using Steam is probably more tech savvy than your average Jack and Jill fan. I am by no means trying to insult the intelligence of my readers with this article.

That being said, I’ve found precious few sites actually explaining the password reset process. So, in the interest of making your password change-over as quick and simple as possible I’ve compiled a little step-by-step guide on changing your Steam password. You’re welcome.

1) Log into Steam with your old password (this should be fairly obvious).

2) Open the toolbar that says ‘Steam’ at the top, right-hand corner of the application.

3) Select ‘Settings’.

4) Click the button that says “Change password or secret question…”

5) Toggle “I want to change my password”. (Again, fairly obvious).

6) Enter your old password and click ‘Next’.

7) Whichever email account you have associated with Steam should now receive a reset code. Find the email and either type copy/paste this code into the required and follow the on-screen instructions.

And there you go. You should be all safe and sound now. Though, it might also be a good idea to keep an eye on any transactions made with your Steam associated credit cards for a little while, just to be on the safe side.

I don’t use the steam client and I don’t want to have to redownload it/install it just to change my password. There’s no way you can do it on the website?

I’ve been everywhere online, apparently there is no other way to access that function other than the client. My only PC now is a corporate laptop that I cannot install Steam on, so I’m boned as well. If you have any friends who use Steam, you can log in as you from their machine and change your pw. If you’re concerned about them buying software with your credit card, you can remove your billing options from Steam online which is what I did.
