The Morning Roast for Feb 9: Kickstarter, iPad 3, and Portal 2 in Skyrim

The Morning Roast

It’s been a more-than-hectic couple of days in news, so we felt that this morning it’s best if you had a good kick to get things going.

The coffee of choice for today is Isle Royale Blend by MI Coffee. It’s a medium roast with a hint of earthy pecan and dark cherry flavors. YUM. It has a bit of a kick to it, so you *might* want to throw in a little plain creamer. One tablespoon at most.

Double Fine Kickstarts an adventure

Double Fine Kickstarter
The total as of 11AM EDT, about 15 hours or so after launch

There have been plenty of games funded through Kickstarter in the past, from indie releases to movies to posters. Need a few thousand to fund your project? Sure, here’s $10 from me. In a move that may shatter all previous precedents, industry darling Double Fine Productions, headed by the enigmatic Tim Schafer, has launched a campaign in cooperation with 2 Player Productions to create a combination classic point-and-click adventure game and documentary film. Launching last night at about 8PM EDT, the group requires what may seem like an astounding $400k to produce the effort, with pledges getting the game, movie, posters, and even dinner with the legendary designer. However, thanks to the power of social media and Tim’s popularity, the campaign has finally reached that goal — in about 8 hours. You read right: $400,000 in less time than a 2-year old sleeps at night. It currently sits at over $700k right now, a confirmed record by Kickstarter.

They’re still 33 days left, too, so expect the endeavor to break more Kickstarter records along the way. We shouldn’t expect this to be the norm though, since Tim is already well known for pulling these kinds of community-focused endeavors and is a pretty well respected person. It’s not like Activision will get away with funding Modern Warfare 4 like this, but the idea for THIS much money may work with a few notable developers here and there.

Maybe we can get Valve to finally work on Half-Life 3.

Portal 2 pops up in Skyrim

We know the Valve guys love the Bethesda guys, so it’s almost no surprise that they’d have a little fun and drop a Portal sphere into the popular RPG epic. What we DON’T know is if this is part of a secret in-game quest or not. Hidden within the “help” screen for the object is a reference to a possible quest that may revolve around it.

Our bets are “no”, but it’d be neat to see Wheatley narrate the slaying of a dragon either way.

The iPad 3 is imminent, so sell your iPad 2 now

We know that there’s a new iPad coming, but when? Our friends, Mr and Mrs Source, are pointing towards the beginning of March for Apple’s press conference on the device. The Sources also claim that the new-ish device will be more of an evolution rather than a revolution, focusing on a better screen and processor instead of a new form factor. You can sell a slightly-worn iPad 2 for around $450, in case you were wondering.
