During their Japanese 3DS-specific Nintendo Direct streaming event tonight, Nintendo announced that the next Smash Bros game is already in development, and the company has brought aboard Namco Bandai / Bandai Namco Games to help with development. Bandai Namco Games is responsible for the upcoming Project X Zone mega collaboration with Sega and Capcom, bringing several of their character together in a tactical strategy RPG, so they’re know-how might fit in well with the Smash Bros series.

Fret not, our pal Sakurai is still involved as the overall game lead. More information will be given at a later date… but at least we know the games (3DS and Wii U versions) are actively being worked on.
