Media Molecule reveals creative tools, PS4 as the “Creative Console”

What does it take to record dreams? Media Molecule wanted to find out, to help bring those dreams to life to development on the PlayStation 4. After trying several tools, the company realized that the best and most precise interface was right in front of them: the Move controller.

Their first foray involved modeling in the air with the controller, building 3D models, adding, and turning it into a performance art. That sculpting tool, along with other creative tools they are working with, allows for creation of anything users would want. This includes art, music, animation, and even games. The gist: it’s all about creating experiences.

Much like their previous creative games, the Little Big Planet series and the upcoming Tearaway, the company hopes to help players tell their stories however they want.

The pre-recorded demo that was shown on stage — which we are assured was one take — involved showing a CGI couple dancing. The older man sees a guitar and, controlled by the motions of the Move controller, picks it up to play with. His dance partner finds a keyboard, and other players join in as well. Much like Nintendo’s WiiMusic before it, the players shook and moved about with their virtual instruments and formed an impromptu band.

Though no game was announced, it’s clear that the possibilities for the tools could be pretty extensive.
