Deus Ex: Human Defiance Defies Expectations

deus ex

Remember that Deus Ex trademark that was floating around a couple of days ago? Turns out it’s nothing to get excited about.

Deus Ex: Human Defiance is actually the name of the upcoming film based in that universe. I say it’s nothing to get excited about because, well, it’s a movie based on a video game. We’ll have to wait a bit longer for more news about actual Deus Ex-related material, I’m afraid.

Jerry Bruckheimer Games Closes

Jerry Bruckheimer Games is, according to a studio representative, “no longer a functioning entity.”

Since its founding in 2007, the company developed precisely zero games and never actually announced a single project. There were reports, however, that the studio was working on three games for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

That seems pretty unlikely now, what with it being shut down and all.

IGN ProLeague Gets Canceled Less than a Month in Advance

ign proleague

Last week, I wrote up a little something about Ziff Davis closing down a swathe of IGN-related properties. Well, it seems the ripples of IGN’s acquisition aren’t quite done being felt yet. The IGN ProLeauge 6 competitive gaming event was canceled today with just under a month’s notice.

That’s bad news for anyone that already bought a plane ticket.

“Generally speaking, such flights cannot be refunded,” John Bain, Axiom Gaming’s head of marketing said in a statement to Gamespot. “Flexible tickets are far more expensive and so eSports teams do not usually purchase them. In our case, were IPL6 not to go ahead, we are able to get the majority of the flight money back due to the choice of airline.”

“Some other teams may not be so fortunate since most airlines do not refund those tickets,” Bain continued. “So, essentially, those who were bringing players to the open bracket are probably going to take the hit. It will be a non-issue for those who qualified since they were not paying for it to begin with.”

Steve’s Game of the Week

I’m afraid the only new thing I’ve been playing this week is a game called Year Walk for iOS.

I’m not very far in, and haven’t discovered much myself so I can’t really spoil anything if I wanted to. I can say that it’s a first-person, 2D puzzle game based on Scandinavian folklore. As a semi-proud descendant of Scandinavian culture, I’ve found the aesthetic very interesting. Also creepy. Very creepy.

Year Walk was released alongside a free companion app that is, supposedly, vital to understanding parts of the full game. Even if it turns out to be largely useless, the companion app features a small sampling of Scandinavian legends, mostly detailing various monsters.

It’s worth noting that the game is focused on folklore, not mythology. Don’t expect Vikings and trolls and thunder gods. Instead, expect stories of drowned babies returned from the grave to drain the life out of their mothers. You know — happy stuff.
