The Crew E3 Trailer

Racing games must surely be in this year. Ubisoft is joining the fray now by announcing their new car-based franchise, The Crew. Crew takes a very different approach to vehicle interaction from the Forzas and Gran Turismos of the world by focusing on mission-based vehicle interactions. Think: Burnout Paradise meets The Italian Job.

It’s a racing game with a plot, pushing the aspect of co-operative play with up to four people carrying out missions meant to bring down drug lords, criminals and the such. These missions, which can be as simple as “win this race to gain experience” or as intense as “chase the boss and crush his car” lend themselves to a non-track experience. As players all part of the same crew compete tasks, they can come together to carry out bigger missions.

With “courses” based on cities like Detroit or barren wasteland deserts, players will have the opportunity to upgrade their vehicle to meet a specific need. Offroad? Grab the right tires. Tight city corners? Get better wheels. Plan on ramming someone into oblivion? Upgrade your Ford F150 Raptor with a brush guard. Cars are tailored to the race or mission.

Vehicles can even be customized using tablet/second screen interaction, through (we assume) Smartglass or the web.

The Crew arrives for Next Gen consoles at some point in the future. How far into the future? NO ONE KNOWS.
