Precursor Games shuts down Shadow of the Eternals crowdfunding campaigns, hopes to relaunch soon

In a surprising move, Precursor Games has announced that it is temporarily shutting down its crowdfunding campaigns for its game Shadow of the Eternals. The campaigns, both on its site and on Kickstarter, had a long ways to go before being fully funded, with time slinking away quickly. Citing “a host of a new exciting opportunities” that will improve the game, Precursor’s Paul Caporicci tells us that the Kickstarter campaign will restart in a few weeks.

Shadow of the Eternals is Precursor’s “spiritual successor” to Eternal Darkness, the hit, albeit niche, Gamecube game by Silicon Knights, of which several staff members are now attached to Precursor. The game was to be a 12-part episodic series that would release on PC and Wii U.

While there have been a few issues with the development of the game, mostly linked to company CCO Denis Dyack, the real concern may have actually been the game’s bizarre episodic structure. Players already have heartache when one episode of serial games misses its timing; twelve episodes would have been potentially mind-numbing. This also doesn’t make for an easy play structure. The Walking Dead was great at 5 episodes, but stretched beyond that and over that length of time (1 year? 2?) it would have broken the plot and flow of the narrative potentially too much.

We expect more news on the future of the game soon. Here’s hoping the “exciting news” makes for a more easily digestible episodic structure.
