Well, that didn’t take long. Just days after announcing the new Kickstarter project for Mighty No 9, a sort of spiritual successor to Megaman, Keiji Inafune may have a massive hit on his hands before the game even launches.

Already surpassing its initial funding goal, Mighty has recently reach 2 of its stretch goals, circling in on its third, and well on its way towards the biggest of the lot at $2.5 Million. This largest goal puts the game onto Wii U, PS3, and Xbox 360 (up until then the game will appear on PC, Mac, and Linux).

With just about a million bucks to go and 27 days left, that stretch goal shouldn’t be an issue.

Why? Well for one, the popularity of the project can be directly attributed to the rabid Megaman fan community that will eat up anything remotely related to or resembling the Blue Bomber. In the case of Mighty, aspects of the concept (winning the weapons of bosses and enemies, and even the character’s visual design) fall right in line with what a truly modern Megaman game would end up being like. Gone are the 8-bit stylings of the Megaman 9 & 10 that appeared on consoles a few years ago, and in are gorgeous hand drawn HD platforming visuals.

If the game plays anything like past Inafune platforming epics, then there’s not much that can go wrong with the project — apart from litigation from Capcom for the obvious similarity to the hero of yore. But if Capcom isn’t willing to do anything with the IP, then at least Keiji and crew can breathe life into the genre and satisfy the enormous swell of fans.

Mighty No 9‘s Kickstarter campaign lasts until Tuesday, October 1st 2013.
