Don’t Starve’s Halloween update highlights total conversion mod support

The Screecher

It seems that Klei Entertainment is trying to showcase Don’t Starve‘s mod support with last week’s release of a total conversion horror mod, titled The Screecher. Besides setting the mood for Halloween with its lost-in-the-woods, Slender-inspired story, the mod demonstrates the indie survival game’s ability to be transformed into brand new experiences.

The Screecher appears to be the first mod of its kind, suggesting that Klei is hoping others will join the party and transmogrify the cruel beast otherwise known as Don’t Starve. As part of the “All’s Well That Maxwell” update, the game has also added a “Top Mods” section and a script editor to its list of modding tools. In addition, Klei released the source code for all those tools on GitHub.

As for the mod itself, The Screecher shares very little in common with the core Don’t Starve experience, leaving out crafting and the game’s dastardly bestiary in lieu of a tighter, linear presentation. The story starts you at a campsite with a constantly draining flashlight and note from your girlfriend who left to search for a nearby escape. From there, you must follow a trail engulfed by darkness that’s littered with abandoned campsites and clues as to what lurks beyond the shadows.

Footage of The Screecher begins at the one minute mark of this most recent trailer.

Don’t Starve is 50 percent off on Steam and Klei’s website for $7.50 until Oct. 29.

Update: Our suspicions appear to be correct as evidenced by recent tweets by Klei.
