Comic conventions are fantastic, especially for fans of cosplay, design, and props. All of these are like living fan fiction, really; creating a realistic Boba Fett costume and taking a photo with Doctor Who and Jon Snow is a fairly common occurrence at these shows. When prop makers showcase similar work it can get a fan giddy. Heck, it can pique the interest of anyone, really, fan or non-fan.

At Motor City Comic Con this past weekend, members from several Star Wars fan groups banded together to create a sort of “Star Wars corner” on the expo floor in a show of solidarity. Darth Vader and Obi Wan would be proud. One section was devoted to hand-made droids. Set to look like the local Jawa scrap yard, this droid pawn shop refurbished and rebuilt the little robots, many of which were functional, beeping and blinking as show-goers walked by.

The build quality was immaculate on the models, and even the composition of the corner was well laid out. The droids were provided by R2 Builders at astromech.net. Also on hand were the 501st Legion and Mandalorian Mercs Costume Club.
