Twitch.tv officially acquired by Amazon for $970 million

twitchtvTwitch Interactive, Inc. CEO Emmett Shear confirmed in a letter to the community that the popular video game streaming website Twitch.tv has officially been acquired by Amazon.com.

“We chose Amazon because they believe in our community, they share our values and long-term vision, and they want to help us get there faster.” said Shear in his letter. “We’re keeping most everything the same: our office, our employees, our brand, and most importantly our independence. But with Amazon’s support we’ll have the resources to bring you an even better Twitch. I personally want to thank you, each and every member of the Twitch community, for what you’ve created.”

As rumored when the company was suspected to be acquired by Google earlier this year, reports indicate that the company was purchased for some $1 billion, although the official number has yet to be released.

UPDATE: Amazon has issued an official statement confirming that the company was acquired “for  approximately $970 million in cash, as adjusted for the assumption of options and other items.”
