The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D is a faithful remaster, but not a true remake

Look, I’m super excited about Majora’s Mask finally coming back to a device I own. I never played the game when it was originally released waaaay back on the N64, just randomly coming across it in passing. I DID play Ocarina of Time probably millions of times, most recently in its latest incarnation on the 3DS. With MM3D coming to the 3DS next year (Spring 2015), I’ll look forward to playing it and experiencing it for the first time.

However, one thing that I noticed with the video (above) of the latest version of Majora’s Mask is that it isn’t as much a massive remake as it is a remaster. It didn’t jump out at me to make me think that it was a huge departure from the original. In fact, prior to seeing the comparison video below, I didn’t think it was very different at all from the N64 original.

I’m much more at ease now knowing that yes, Nintendo did update the game — but not as much as I would have liked them to. Am I just spoiled by the recent remakes we’ve come across, like Last of Us or Halo 2? With a game that’s going to be 15 years old when it’s re-released, I guess I was just expecting a more significant graphical bump, whether it was style or otherwise. I guess it just still looks… “old”.

Nintendo once revealed that it takes them around 6-8 months to remaster classic games for modern devices (a la Wind Waker HD), but I was hopeful that a game like this would have been given extra care and “baking” time to really give it the full potential it deserves. Granted, we are just seeing the video in 2D rather than the 3D we’ll experience on the 3DS, but will that be enough?

I guess we’ll see in Spring 2015.

As an added bonus, here’s the WAY creepy advertisement for the launch of the original Majora’s Mask on N64:

And, Nintendo has gone ahead and released a new piece of poster artwork for the game, which should make for excellent mobile phone wallpaper:

You can compare it to the original’s promotional poster here, too:
