Trailer Check: Soul Axiom, Escape Dead Island, and Aurion fight their way to the weekend

Soul Axiom looks like a cross between Bioshock and Portal, with the neon art style of something like Tron. At least it does so via the trailer above. The game is set in the near-ish future, and focuses on a character as he explores his memories in a strange data server. It’s the future, so much like other modern sci fi servers are the de facto way of storing the history of our minds.

I haven’t heard much about Soul Axiom, but the art style piqued my interest enough to keep me on the lookout for when it arrives. Flashes of light, neon colors, modern graphic design — it has the makings of a unique visual experience. The game, produced by Wales Interactive, is set to be released to Steam this coming week.

Dead Island is a series that you can either dismiss for its generic gameplay or enjoy it for what it is: “Zombie Shooter for the Sake of Zombie Shooters”. It’s a guilty pleasure — a palate cleanser. I haven’t played a whole heck of a lot of the first few games in the series, but understand that some of the biggest criticisms have been its relative ho-hum plot and mediocre gameplay.

With Escape Dead Island, publisher Deep Silver and developer Fatshark are changing that up by introducing a more survival horror influence. Like its title says, the goal is to escape the zombie-infested location. Yes, this will undoubtedly include plowing through any number of zombies, but there will be much more of a focus on running or hiding from them this time. “Sneaking”, as they say.

The art style is different this time around, looking more like a Telltale adventure game.

Escape Dead Island arrives this week on PS3 & Xbox 360.

I really loved Muramasa, the Wii-turned-Vita RPG fighting game from Vanilla. I dig into other games in that genre as well, currently plowing through Dragon’s Crown. Central African dev studio Kiro’o Games seems to like the same thing, as their upcoming Aurion looks to enter into the market soon.

The sidescroller combines modern art with African themes and classicism, with an almost Samurai Jack type of influence thrown in, to tell the story of Enzo Kori-Odan, the prince of Zama, as he suffers a coup by his brother on his coronation. He then travels around the world to rebuild his legacy, becoming enveloped in geopolitical issues along the way. There’s no release date yet on the game, but it’s looking to arrive on PC (and maybe Xbox 360) in the near future.
