Gamescom: Mojang shows off Cobalt, coming in October to Xbox One

Minecraft isn’t the only game Mojang has in store for Xbox One owners. No-sir-ee-bob! The developers of the biggest game on the planet have been hard at work developing the monumental follow-up to the biggest game of the last 10 years. It’s impossible to think that Minecraft can even be topped, but this new game is clearly worth the billion dollars that Microsoft paid for the Swedish developer.

The new game, Cobalt, is unlike like anything we’ve seen before. It’s… it’s… IT’S… well, it’s a simple platforming MOBA.

Yeah, that was anticlimactic. Sorry about that. Cobalt was developed in-house for the Mojang team to pass the time in between squashing Minecraft bugs and creating new content for the world-builder. It’s not meant to be magnificently historic, just fun. The company decided to let the game out to the masses to enjoy some of their break-time antics as well, announcing an October release date for the Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC.

It’s multiplayer, it’s 2D, it’s platforming, it has some hacking elements(?), and space ships and elevators and guns and… well, it has a lot of stuff in it, and some scoring. It’s not a bad idea, mind you… we were just hoping for a Minecraft Hololens or VR announcement first.
