Nintendo unveils Shovel Knight amiibo coming soon, more Shovel Knight games on the way

Good game, wallet. Pack it up. Saving for my daughter’s college fund was fun while it lasted. Nintendo has just announced possibly the greatest amiibo of them all, and I’m going to have to buy all of them.

Shovel Knight is arriving in plastic with an NFC chip inside of him, and we’re all doomed.

At its Nindies@Night event yesterda — and in the video below created by Game Grumps — Nintendo and Yacht Club Games revealed the new Shovel Knight amiibo. Compatible with both the 3DS and Wii U versions of the game, the toys-to-life figure will unlock some neat content for players. The big one: co-op! Coming exclusively to the Wii U version of the game, tapping in the figure will allow a second player to jump in. Otherwise, coming to both the Wii U and 3DS versions is the ability to upgrade & customize their Shovel Knight with “new visual enhancements, relics and abilities.” The figure will also be compatible in future Shovel Knight games, which is a confirmation that we’re GETTING MORE SHOVEL KNIGHT GAMES beyond the free Plague of Shadows DLC update coming soon!

Woohoo!

This marks Nintendo’s continued support of it’s indie developer scene. Yacht Club Games is the first indie dev to receive an amiibo, and will have Shovel Knight sit alongside non-Nintendo properties like Mega Man and Pac-Man on shelves across the world. That’s pretty dope!

No official release date yet, but recent leaks suggest November, especially considering that retail versions of the Shovel Knight game will arrive in October.

Now we’re just curious if the persistent “Shovel Knight in Smash Bros” rumors will happen too. Please make it so, Nintendo!
