Playstation VR priced at $399, launches October 2016

Begun, the VR wars have.

Today at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, Sony officially announced the price and availability date of its upcoming Playstation VR virtual reality headset. The device will carry an MSRP of $399 US when it arrives in October of this year, confirming that Sony’s big push for the Fall and Holiday season will be the bold new VR world.

Snazzy!
Snazzy!

Playstation VR will come packaged with the head-mounted unit, a processor box, earbuds, and all the cords you could possibly need, and will require a Playstation Camera (sold separately) for head-tracking. The bundles will debut in the Fall, including an all-in-one PSVR + Camera+ Move controller bundle for the ultimate experience. Heck, there will probably be a PS4/PSVR bundle announced at some point too, but we’re just speculating until then.

Sony announced that Playroom will be included free with the device and 50 games will be available between launch and the end of the year, with over 230 developers working on games and experiences already.

Here are the final specs:

  • 5.7 inch OLED screen (split for each eye)
  • 1920 x 1080 RGB screen (960 x 1080 per eye)
  • 120hz refresh rate
  • 360 degree head tracking
  • 100 degree field of view
  • Sub-18ms latency
