The Super Mario Bros come to Minecraft on the Wii U

It was bound to happen. A wildly popular, paradigm shifting game based on 8-bit pixel blocks, Minecraft, made its way to Nintendo’s Wii U late last year via eShop, and now it’s being mashed together with another paradigm shifting game based on 8-bit pixel blocks, Super Mario Bros.

Well, Super Mario World, Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine to be exact.

This isn’t the first time Nintendo characters have come to the games of other publishers, but what makes this such a unique situation is that Minecraft‘s developer, Mojang, is owned by Nintendo’s hardware competitor Microsoft. You know, the Xbox folk. Nintendo’s Mario infusion of Minecraft was something that fans of both series have wanted for a long time; the worlds and characters were lovingly recreated by Mario fans in Minecraft almost instantly when the original game first launched years ago on PC. It seems natural that the two worlds would combine, at least aesthetically and thematically.

The Mario Bros arrive in the form of the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack DLC on May 17, for free, and will be included on the retail disc when it launches to stores a month later on June 17. Included in the pack will be 40 character skins, including the brothers, Princess Peach, the Koopa clan, and more. The world’s textures will even be redesigned to be more Mario-like and a pre-created area will await.

It’s a neat addition to the Wii U’s version of the game, even though the console isn’t long for this world. Let’s hope it comes to the NX soon as well.
