Crossout’s mortar combat arrives on Early Access

I had the chance to play Crossout at this year’s PAX East, and was a little torn on the game. Part of me loved the Mad Max feel of the dystopian future and the vehicle designs, and yet I was sort of getting worn out by multiplayer vehicular combat. What is there to set it apart from the flood of games in the genre?

I’ll find out soon enough, as the game has made its way onto Steam Early Access and is ready to play.

A lot seems to have been expanded on the demo I played way back in April. We can still design our vehicles from scratch and modify them as we go along. This extends right down to the weapons and abilities, which can make every ride feel completely unique. The game now has some really interesting PvE missions, which could separate it from the increasingly crowded field.

Convoy Escort is an escort assignment, tasking players with keeping an armored truck from being destroyed along a huge route. Instead of just outright failing, players will get bonuses and loot based on how far they are able to make it with the truck. Heist is a town-based quest, with players invading a settlement and grabbing loot while enemies and turrets attack. Both of these seem interesting, and could get a player like me (who tends to get slaughtered in competitive MMOs) into the co-op modes.

Perhaps it’s time to get my Mad Max on and take on some scavengers.

Crossout is now available from Gaijin Entertainment and Targem Games on Early Access for $30.
