World of Tanks comic book from Dark Horse rolls out this week

Though games and movies may not have always worked together, games and comics have been a different story. From classics Mega Man and Sonic to modern properties Assassin’s Creed and Dead Space, the two have tended to mix together well. Perhaps it’s because in most cases, the comics are an expansion of the universe, not a complete retelling of a story. The foundations are already there, and the books usually cater to the fan base specifically, so it’s a sort of natural progression — we want to know the flushed-out details around our favorite characters.

The latest gaming IP to adopt comics as a medium is a bit different: World of Tanks. There are no leading characters in the games, no long-standing story or plot, nothing to emotionally tie us in. So how could a comic be based on this property? Easy.

TANKS.

Tanks? Tanks. There is massive history in tanks and their crew, and World of Tanks: Roll Out capitalizes on just that. The plot focuses on a team of British tankers as they face off against their German counterparts during World War II, so expect battles, strategy and probably some personal intrigue. Written by Garth Ennis (best known for his work on Punisher and Preacher) and published by Dark Horse Comics, Roll Out debuts on August 31st, and will be followed by 4 more issues.

The comic will actually work its way into the game, as the tanks featured in the book will become available in the PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One versions for a limited time. So, it’s kind of like WoT will have the beginnings of a narrative — at least in the aspects surrounding the popular multiplayer game.
