PaRappa, Crash Bandicoot, WipeOut remasters dominate PSX

We hope you like old games! Again!

Thankfully, these old games are some of the best. During their PlayStation Showcase, Sony announced that nine classic PlayStation games are making a comeback in 2017 via remasters. Modern remasters serve a few purposes. First, they are quick(er) ways to make some cash for publishers, as dedicated fans will usually gobble them up. They’re also great ways to sort of “train” up and coming studios in an IP, especially if certain levels of quality are required. And, most importantly, they’re there to gauge interest in potential new editions of games. So if they sell well enough, fans can potentially look forward to new sequels.

Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy

Fans of Crash Bandicoot enjoyed seeing him in the latest Skylanders game and Netflix series, and now his original adventures are making another comeback. While they appeared across other modes of PlayStation play and re-issue, they’ve become dated. By remastering the original platforming runner, developer Vicarious Visions took original dev Naughty Dog’s now 20+ year old work and rebuilt around it rather than just upscaling and tweaking textures. They’re also looking to fix some of the dated aspects (uniform menus, save states, etc) in an effort to modernize some of the periphery of the series.

WipeOut Omega Collection

The return of WipeOut is more tilted towards the “prettying up” side of development, focusing on a traditional remaster to push the game into 4K and HDR. WipeOut Omega Collection brings together WipeOut HD, Fury and 2048 in enhanced visuals and new tunes. It’s more of a “definitive version” of the three games, but fans may appreciate it.

PaRappa, Patapon and Loco Roco

Spanning PS1 through to PS3 and Vita, the collection of rhythm music 2D games is perhaps most anticipated for the return of PaRappa the Rapper. While a new game hasn’t been announced, the return of the original will be enough to satiate many. And if it does well enough, it would be hard *not* to create a new one.

All three games are anticipated for 2017.
