Steam will soon stream games to iOS and Android

For those of us that are sometimes forced to play our PC games away from our monitors or laptops, the options can be pretty limited. Steam Link did a nice job of zipping the video to our TV, but what if we have to fight for that too? Having a family sometimes (usually?) means giving up the screen until late in the evenings.

Valve has heard our cry. Valve has a solution. Valve has… AN APP!

In reality, Valve has figured out a way to take the Steam Link hardware and turn it into a downloadable app, allowing us to stream our games to a whole slew of new devices. Actually, the company has announced two apps: one for games and one for movies.

The Steam Link app will let gamers stream software to iOS and Android devices, such as iPhones, tablets, and Android TV and Apple TV. The app will support a variety of Bluetooth controllers, including the official Steam controller. The app roles out May 21 on iOS and in beta on Android. The app requires connection to the host PC over ethernet or wirelessly on the same network (at least 5GHz).

Meanwhile, the Steam Video app will be a direct link to the Steam store for videos and movies, and won’t need to be tethered. Users will also be able to download the films for offline viewing. The app will arrive later this year.
