E3 2018: The Last of Us Part 2 stuns in latest gameplay trailer

Naughty Dog’s repertoire of mixing exceptional gameplay with phenomenal storytelling looks to continue.

In The Last of Us II, Ellie has grown up in a world of evil, darkness and survival. She’s not a kid, not a fun-loving teenager — in fact, she’s downright lethal. The latest trailer for the game, which debuted at Sony’s E3 2018 PlayStation Showcase this week, revealed this new Ellie.

Set at a friendly church dance, Ellie wonders if she’s being stared at for being dangerous, before being reassured by her love interest that she is just drawing glances of jealousy. A quick transition proves otherwise, as we see the 19 yr old sneaking her way through an enemy compound, killing with precision and a lack of fear. She’s knowledgeable of terrain, she can craft on the fly and she has the accuracy and speed of a sniper, whether it’s with a gun or a bow. The trailer shows us refined combat, mobility and sneaking, all capitalizing on the engine updates from Uncharted 4.

When the world falls apart, humanity doubts itself, and doubts what it needs to be doing. It’s why successful characterizations of people have them shake when shooting guns or take endless time to be okay with killing. Ellie, on the other hand, grew up with all of this. Her most formative years took place in the apocalypse, snd so she’s both excellent at survival and conflicted about why she has to do it.

The Last of Us Part II takes us on her journey as she exits this point in her life, and sets the story against the backdrop of new conflicts and danger, and humanity’s return from the brink.

There’s still no word on an exact date when the game is set to launch.
