Nintendo restarts Metroid Prime 4 development

Nintendo restarts Metroid Prime 4 development

In the early hours of the tail end of the week, Nintendo finally gave an update on its much anticipated Metroid Prime 4.

TLDR: It won’t arrive any time soon.

The news was delivered by Shinya Takahashi, Nintendo’s Senior Managing Executive Officer, informing fans that the company wasn’t happy with the level of quality that it expects from the game, and is making the difficult decision to restart the process. The company was rumored to be working with Bandai Namco on the game, though there was no confirmation. With a restart, the development will likely push the game launch out to 2020 or 2021 at the earliest.

Thankfully, there’s some good news.

Nintendo revealed that they’ve decided to shift development of the game to Retro Studios, who created the first three games in the series. The studio developed the fantastic two Donkey Kong Country games for Wii and Wii U, and have been working on another unrevealed project as well — rumored to be a Star Fox racing game.

It may seem like a bump in the road for the game right now, but Nintendo’s 2019 is fairly packed with games already, and with the Mario, Zelda and Splatoon teams already on their next projects, it may not feel like that much of a hole whenever the game does arrive.
