SouljaBoy missed out on monetizing Crank That effectively.

The Ouya is dying. The Switch is king. But that won’t stop new challengers from appearing in the marketplace. Enter: The Playdate!

Panic, the publishers of Firewatch and the upcoming Untitled Goose Game, have been hard at work over the past four years developing a strange little new portable video games console. The PlayDate is an LCD-based product, bearing a striking resemblance to the Gameboy Pocket, with a big ole’ crank stuck to the side of it. The crank isn’t a requirement to get the device running — it’s just another alternate control method should you get bored with buttons.

Swoon.

The Playdate will run an equally interesting method of game access: Every week for 12 weeks, a new game will become accessible on the device, with the intent that you’ll focus on each game individually and enjoy them all instead of picking and choosing only one or two. The games will be developed by some well known creators, like Keita Takahashi, Zach Gage, Bennett Foddy and Shaun Inman. Crankin’s Time Travel Adventure is the only game that’s been announced, and is shown in the promotional images of the product.

The Playdate won’t be cheap for such a small device: Expect it to launch sometime in 2020 for $149.
