The indie gems of E3 2019

An outing for the indies

E3 is always big for the mega blockbuster games, the giant press conferences, and the complaints that our favorite games are delayed or haven’t been announced yet. But, E3 is also home to some of the latest information and debuts for indie games as well. E3 2019 was no different. The amount of indie games that were announced at the show this year was bigger than ever before. We’ve taken a moment to highlight some of our favorites, and when (if we know) we can expect them.

GYLT

Tequila Works’s new game should seem right in line with its history of dark, narrative adventures. GYLT follows a girl fighting through a world full of fear and choice, evil and… maybe some school stuff? It was actually announced in the week prior to E3 during Google’s Stadia event. No release date yet.

Way to the Woods

When humanity falls and the animal world takes over, how will nature react? Anthony Tan’s WTTW follows a deer and fawn as they traverse through this new human-less world, take on challenges and puzzles, and come across other animals that might not be as friendly.

Spiritfarer

Developed by Thunder Lotus, of Jotun fame, Spiritfarer tasks us with helping the deceased and lost souls make their way to the other side via boat. The intriguing game idea has us manage resources for our journey, meet and invite new spirits, and upgrade and modify the boat as we need it. It’s been announced for Xbox One, PC, PS4 and Switch, and arrives sometime in 2020.

Midnight Ghost Hunt

I’ve always wondered what it would be like to actually look for ghosts in real life. Though I probably won’t get the chance, I can at least live it out virtually. MGH, by developer Vaulted Sky Games, lets players choose sides between ghosts and humans in a multiplayer experience. Ghost teams will possess items and try to stay away from the humans. Human Ghost Hunter teams will do their best to try and capture all of the ghosts. The time-based game pushes the Ghost Hunters to accomplish their task by midnight, after which the tables turn and the ghosts become more powerful, requiring the hunters to survive the night.

No release date yet, so we’ll try not to go to bed until we find out.

Twelve Minutes

Games that include time loop mechanics can be incredibly innovative, and 12 Minutes is no different. Debuting during the Xbox E3 2019 event, the game stars a man who has limited time to spend with his wife, make important choices, and try to do whatever it takes to get out of the loop. It’s “coming soon” to Xbox One.

Cris Tales

Speaking of time, Cris Tales has a novel way of interacting with it. Our actions in the game’s past directly affect our present and future situations, and all occur simultaneously. Coming 2020 for PS4, Xbox One, Switch and PC.

RPG Time: The Legend of Wright

Legend of Wright looks exactly like my notebook in High School chemistry class, filled with drawings and sketches and stories instead of molecular equations. That cool aesthetic is just a part of the experience, in which we play out an RPG across pages on a table. It’s coming 2020.
