about a week or two ago i downloaded the demo for trine off the playstation network. i read up on the game before it was released and it sounded cool so when the demo came out i definetly had to check it out. for anyone who hasn't tried it, do so, it's pretty damn neat if you're into that type of game. ahh those crazy 2d-3d side scrollers. 2.5d?

anyway, i obviously liked it enough to figure i'd actually get it. although, being the cheap bastard that i am, i declined when i saw the price tag of 20 bucks when i went to purchase the game. i'm still on the fence but i might wait in the hopes of some day it might be one of the games on the crazy holiday deals the psn throws out. for example i picked up flower this past weekend for 5 bucks versus the usual price tag of $10. i figured that was a good enough deal to warrant the download.

i mean 20 bucks, to me at least, sounded kinda steep. the game does look beautiful for a downloadable game. also considering it looks way better than those crappy asteroids type of flash games that are the usual downloadable fare under various skins (shooting ships, zombies, robots, nucleic acid, whatever) i guess 20 clams isn't really THAT bad of a price.

yet i still hesitated. hell, i'm the guy who looks for cheap deals on "actual games". actual games such as brand new stuff like ratchet and clank for 15 bucks or resident evil 5 for 20 bucks. actual, physical, modern, expensive, 3d games i find in bargain bins for what i feel is the right price, where i think i'm getting it for a sweet deal. so why would i pay $20 for a downloadable game versus a "real" game?

am i just that damn cheap? am i just stupid and crazy? well i am stupd and crazy so lets just stick to asking whether i'm cheap. and yes i'm pretty cheap sometimes. ehh kinda most of the time. although i will be paying full price for darksiders come january 5th. :P

as cheap as i am i still like the physical stuff i can hold and psyche myself out because i'm actually purchasing someTHING. this physical thing i stick in my physical system versus downloading something out of thin air. air shouldn't cost 20 bucks. well, transferable electronic data air anyway. that's why i probably will never own a kindle, but that's a different subject altogether.

so i guess to make my point, how much is too much for downloadable content and games? what would you pay for a game or an expansion pack? why are some little big planet skins a dollar while others are two or three?

of course it's all due to marketing and popularity, supply and demand, but again, how much is too much? if trine was 10 bucks i'd have immediately purchased it. 15 bucks and i prrrrrrobably would have maybe downloaded it. now $20 is where i drew the line and decided not to get it.

what about anybody else? would you pay 20 bucks for a flash game? 25 bucks for an expansion pack? 2 dollars for a stupid gun skin just cos it looks cool?

My iPhone has changed the way I buy downloadable games. My mobile gaming limit is probably $3, and my console download limit is $10.

Anything more than that and I'd rather own a disk right now.
