DiRT 3 Teaser Released

Category : News, Videos

CodeMasters released a teaser for the third installment in the DiRT series today, appropriately titled “DiRT 3″. A slickly-designed video using transitions to showcase some of the different environments that will be available in the next game is all we get for now, but I’m already liking what I see.

As expected, particle effects are improved over previous iterations (rain and snow in particular are looking better than ever), as well as vehicle and environment rendering, which are beginning to cross into the uncanny valley as far as realism goes.

No specific release date has been announced as of yet, just a nebulous “2011″ at the end of the trailer. A simultaneous cross-platform (PC, PS3, 360) release is hoped for by this PC gamer in particular.

Mortal Kombat Teaser? – Could it be?

Category : News, Videos

Now circulating quickly around the net, what appears to be a teaser for a new Mortal Kombat movie is creating a bit of a stir.

At this point in time it’s difficult to say if this is the real deal, or just a VERY well-done fan video. The production values are high enough to imply some sort of studio backing. Unfortunately (when trying to tell the difference, that is), in today’s technology, a very well-heeled amateur can put together some very well-produced stuff.

Either way, the video is a great watch, though definitely not for the kids. If they are producing a movie along this vein, I couldn’t imagine it being rated anything less than a solid R. In fact, if this were the official trailer, it would probably be red-banded.

Watch it, and see what you think.

UPDATE: Jeri Ryan (the actress portraying Sonya Blade) stated via a Twitter posting that the video is a pitch for Warner Brothers to try and reboot the series. This kind of thing can work out well if the studios are smart enough to pick up on a good idea, as this was how we got District 9 from the ‘Alive in Joburg‘ short.

My Desk is 8-Bit

Category : Videos

Here’s a great video to kick off your day: My Desk is 8-Bit, by Alex Varanese, is a conceptual video done with stop-motion animation.  The video depicts an 8-bit sidescrolling helicopter flying and blasting through a city, complete with explosions, lost lives, and blocky graphics. The entire look is reminiscent of 3-D Dot Game Heroes.

Note: The part of the video where the chopper flies behind buildings is some true layering goodness.

Birth of a Hype Machine: Marketing Halo Reach

Category : News, Videos

When “Birth of a Spartan” debuted on XBox Live recently, we enjoyed the quality of the short film. Much like the live-action videos for Halo 3, the Halo: Reach promotional clip had Hollywood-level art direction and production, leaving us wondering why they never went through with the Blomkamp Halo film.

Microsoft recently passed along the Youtube video link to us, and we can’t help but think that there will be subsequent clips in the series.  Is this something that Halo fans have come to expect?  Live action shorts preceding the launch of the next game in the series?  Is this a valid way to build hype for a game, by shooting live-action never in-game videos?

Watching the video, we get the feeling that it sits somewhere in “prequel”-ville, meant to lead us into a character (that may never exist in the actual game) much like car companies do with concept vehicles.

Are live-action videos like concept cars, setting up a game’s intent and theme and serving as an introduction to the product?  Or are they simply pure marketing?  While more than likely the latter, we can at least agree that the films show the high level of creativity that the Halo teams continue to have as they create their games each time.

Fallout: New Vegas Teaser Trailer

Category : Videos

What’s this?  Fallout: New Vegas coming Fall 2010?  Yes, please!

The trailer for the next Fallout game has landed, teasing us about what we will see and play come Fall (read: probably October, right up against Fable III).  Is this something we will be playing?  Are we burnt out from shooter RPGs?  Are rats and mutants going to make dubious acquaintances?

Coming for the PS3, XBox 360, and PC.

Sunday Video: Complete Mega Man 2 Walkthrough

Category : Videos

I’ve completed Mega Man 2 exactly one time, about 10 years after it was released.  It didn’t take that long because I couldn’t get around to playing it; I had plenty of opportunities, and played it several times.  Oh no.  It took that long because I kept dying at that stupid, hateful dragon.  You know the one.

Now, had YouTube been around in 1998 I would have loved to see this series back then: a complete walk through of Mega Man 2 by Nintendo-Daily‘s Classicgamer sent to us by the site.

In the spirit of our love for classic gaming we’ve posted the infamous dragon video below, but be sure to hop on to Nintendo-Daily to watch the entire 15-part series.  God bless you, Classicgamer.  And God damn you, mecha-dragon.

Halo: Reach Trailer is Unleashed… WITH A VENGEANCE

Category : Videos

[Update: Hi-Res video straight from Spike TV & GameTrailers.com]

Last grainy, poorly-shot video of the night, we promise! This time, it’s a cinematic trailer for Halo: Reach. The video shows what the teaser images have been, well, teasing: a squad-based game full of Spartans, aliens, LADIES, and vehicles.

Hey, it’s Halo. Do we need to say any more than that?

Medal of Honor Trailer Unleashed with a VENGEANCE!

Category : Videos

[UPDATE: Now with video courtesy SpikeTV/GameTrailers.com]

The caveat to posting YouTube videos for debuts is that the quality is a bit, well, questionable. While we’re posting the Medal of Honor trailer, we’ll preface it by saying that expect and actual, HD video to replace this once it becomes available.

Until then, however, take a look at the new Medal of Honor! Gritty and bearded, the game looks to have more than just a “Modern Warfare” flair to it, showcasing only a few shots of gunning and with more of vehicles, bombing raids, and Jack Bauer-like information torture.
