GOTY 2013 Super Mario 3D World

Only the team behind the magic that is Super Mario Galaxy could bring soul to multiplayer Mario games. Nintendo in 2013 released several games that reinvent the formulas of their predecessors. Fire Emblem, Pikmin, Zelda and Pokemon all highlight the year and could have a slot on a number of GOTY lists. Super Mario 3D World follows that trend, delivering a joyous console Mario experience in both its multiplayer frantic grab fest and the rewarding single player experience.

3D World is a showcase of the power (yes, power) behind the Wii U with Mario’s first true HD release. The worlds you visit are full of life and character, beautifully designed, and come in a variety of packages. The characters we’ve come to know well over the years — Mario, Luigi, Princess and Toad, and even the newly added Rosalina —  are designed to let you grow attached to them over the course of the travels. They make for a great cast, each with their own unique ability that make playing through puzzles even more enjoyable. But one ability rules over all.

Cat. Cat. Caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat. Cat. Caaaaat. Cat.

Cat.

There is no way to understate the cat suit. If I could I would change the ringtone on my phone to the cat noise at the completion of the levels. The verticality the cat suit adds to each level is a great example of how Super Mario 3D World reinvents on the ideas found in Mario games for the past decade.

Nintendo knocked it out of the park again with a great game that stands on its own, packed with great looking content, and cats. Super Mario 3D World is the best case for the Wii U at the moment, giving us everything we could possibly want.

And it’s full of cats. Lots of cats.
