Epic reveals Unreal Engine 5 in PS5 demo

Eyeballs = blown

Epic took the time today to completely blow our socks off. And our minds. And everything else, really. During a special presentation, both on Geoff Keighley’s Summer Games Fest and on their corporate blog, Epic revealed the next generation of the Unreal Engine, aptly named “Unreal Engine 5.”

Epic’s goal is to get film-quality CGI to function in-game with UE5 for development studios, and showed off just what that could be in a gameplay demo titled “Lumen in the Land of Nanite.” The demo shows how UE5 will enable enhanced lighting through its Lumen framework, and how millions of triangles make up just small assets, for enhanced photorealism. It features a character running through caves, flying over terrain, and interacting with complex environments. Improvements in physics and spacial sound, as well as particles that understand their behavior with and proximity to each other.

And, perhaps most fascinatingly, the demo is running on PS5 development hardware. It’s perhaps what we can expect the quickly-approaching next generation of gaming to finally look like.

UE5 will be available for current- and next-gen consoles, as well as mobile and PC in preview in early 2021, with a full release later in the year.
