LEGO Super Mario receives new duds

Power-Up Packs give the plumber new gear for the playsets

The Super Mario Bros series might be known as much for its power-ups as it is its level design hooks, so it’s natural that these would make the transition to the IRL playspace. The Mario Power-Up Packs are four individual articles of “clothing” that can be added to the Mario figuring in the LEGo Super Mario set to let the hero incorporate new moves.

Yes, you’re still just bumping him around on top of other LEGOs, but now different things happen when you wear specific power-ups. Fire Mario can attack enemies with a fireball from a distance. Propeller Mario collects the digital coins when he’s flying in the air. Cat Mario makes kitty sounds and collects coins when he’s horizontally climbing up walls. And finally, Builder Mario breaks LEGO bricks when he comes smashing down after a jump, collecting coins that way.

Yes, lots of digital coins (which are used to sort of keep track of scores). The Power-up Packs launch on August 1st.
