Microsoft cancels its Xbox Live GOLD price hike on same day it announced it

Microsoft backs down after massive backlash

Microsoft has backed down from its intended Xbox Live GOLD price increase. The big factor, which we noted wasn’t necessarily the monthly $1 increase but the 6-month and 12-month doubling of cost, created an intense outcry both externally and internally. Bad press, bad fan reaction, and bad business analyst takes all combined with what we’re told is a bit of an internal shockwave to push the company’s plans back. It will now *not* increase the price, and instead allow some free-to-play games to function online outside of the Live GOLD network system.

That means Fortnite will be playable online without having to pay for an extra subscription, just like on every other device. The changes for free-to-play and other updates will take place over the coming months.
