Square Enix reveals two new Final Fantasy VII mobile games

A battle royale and a historical retelling join the Fantasy series

I have to admit, I didn’t have “Final Fantasy Battle Royale” on my February game bingo card, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not a great idea. Today, after Sony’s State of Play event, Square Enix took to their social channels to reveal a pair of new Final Fantasy VII games, both for mobile.

Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier is a battle royale game set years before the events of FFVII in which players take control of a Soldier training in Midgar. Players will use weapons, skills, magic and summons to battle it out. It’ll have both first- and third-person elements, costumes and more when it arrives later this year.

Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis is another pseudo remake of the game, but in a very different way. The game will retell the story of FFVII and its spin-offs, remakes, and adjacent plots through a chapter-style experience. There will be an overworld with pre-rendered visuals, as well as the familiar polygonal Final Fantasy visuals and simplified turn-based combat. It’s sort of a complete compendium of the Final Fantasy narrative. Ever Crisis arrives in 2022.
