EA and DICE reveal Battlefield 2042

Game will drop single-player campaign and focus on classic Battlefield experience

EA and DICE have formally revealed the next Battlefield game: Battlefield 2042. The game will return to the series’ roots with a focus on multiplayer and no campaign. The game draws inspiration from classic Battlefield concepts and community moments, as evidenced by the insane “jump out of a jet and shoot another jet” moment, and aims to bring the fan base together. It’s a bold direction, and a sort of reset, for the series.

Battlefield 2042 will have players hitting locations around the world, and take on not only human assailants but also battle against (or with!) the new dynamic weather system. Yes, in the year 2042 the world is being ravaged by global warming, causing wild twisters and storms that can be used to your advantage — players can don wingsuits and fly closer to enemies, follow twisters as a sort of cover, and even hope for some lucky coincidences that might harm their opponents. It’s a fascinating way to mix up the battle…field for a fresh experience each time.

The trailer revealed some of those explosive moments, while at the same time teasing 128-player battles (or, “half of a MAG” as we like to call it) on PS5, Xbox Series, and PC and a new Hazard mode. Conquest and Breakthrough will return in “All-Out Warfare” mode, and a Premium Battle Pass system that gives new cosmetics (no gameplay changes).

Battlefield 2042 will launch on October 22 for PS4/PS5, Xbox One/Series, and PC. More reveals are set for Microsoft’s Xbox showcase on Sunday and EA Play in July.
