Oh no, now LEGO and Epic Games are trying to copy Roblox

The companies announce a “metaverse” collaboration for kids, but no one knows what that is

I’ve been hoping to use the word “metaverse” on SideQuesting only ironically, but now even that’s bled into full on actual usage. Shudder.

The latest incarnation of the metaverse concept, whatever a metaverse is, comes from LEGO and Epic Games. The companies have announced a collaborative project that will bring content creation to kids and families in a “safe” and meaningful way.

Sigh.

Yes, it sounds awfully a lot like what Roblox is already doing. Epic and LEGO even have three principles that they’re aiming for with the project:

  • Protect children’s right to play by making safety and wellbeing a priority.
  • Safeguard children’s privacy by putting their best interests first.
  • Empower children and adults with tools that give them control over their digital experience.

Notice something that’s missing?

GAMES AND FUN. Yeah, the metaverse isn’t actually about games and fun, it’s about everything else. Anyways, we don’t know what this is because the description of the collaboration is incredibly vague and full of SEO-friendly buzzwords. “We’re building a metaverse!” THAT MEANS NOTHING.

The popularity of Roblox isn’t LEGOs (as much as I love LEGOs) and it isn’t Fortnite (as much as I love Fortnite; it’s that you can do a bunch of stuff that LEGO and Epic would never let you get away with due to their IP usage.

Anyways, go play with LEGOs like god intended, in physical space or outer space.
